A Special Letter from Michael Garman
Colorado Springs has been my home for 40 years. I came here in 1971 with my very pregnant wife and a trunk of sculpture molds. I could never have imagined how warmly this community would take me in, inspire me, and support me through so many trials and successes. More than once I’ve watched flames threaten my studio, my sculptures-even my own home. But I was lucky-able to escape the kind of loss my neighbors are now experiencing.
In the midst of the Waldo Canyon Fire last week, we watched helpless as 30,000 neighbors fled the mountains around Colorado Springs, nearly 350 lost their homes, and thousands continue to reel from the devastation of the worst fire in Colorado history. Please know that our thoughts continue to be with you all. You have stood brave, but now is the time to lean on your community and know that we are standing strong right beside you.
Today and every day, tens of thousands of men and women fight to keep us safe. They brave flames, heat, hidden dangers, and their own fears. They do it without fanfare, and all too often without the appropriate recognition. It was an awesome sight to see the emergency vehicles roll into town last week, coming up I-25 and heading toward the flames. They came from all over the country to bring aid and willing hands. In hundred-degree heat, they labored without letup to create a barrier between the fire and us. I am in awe of their strength of character. I find myself unable to find words enough to thank them.
For 50 years I have tried to use my skills as an artist to honor American heroes from all walks of life. I encourage each one of you to thank your own local heroes. Our communities are filled with selfless people who kept us safe yesterday and will do it again tomorrow. We have firefighters and police, soldiers, National Guard, Forest Service, linemen, teachers, community volunteers, and neighbors. We are a nation of heroes. And I am proud to stand with you.
Sincerely,
Michael Garman
